Biographical information
In 1982 I completed the Industrial Arts program at Cabrillo College then transferred to Cal State Chico. I graduated from the Industrial Arts program at Chico in 1985 at which time I entered graduate school and earned a California teaching credential. I taught school for the Monterey County Office of Education that year then entered the private non-profit field. For the next ten years I was an administrator in the field of Adult Special Education -- pioneering the philosophy of employment mainstreaming adults with developmental disabilities. Concurrently, I continued my work in industrial arts as a custom furniture maker. I left the education field to become a full time carpenter of custom homes and am continuing in that endeavor to date.
I have had the honor to be in the high quality custom and innovative construction business almost exclusively. I have been involved with traditional stick frame construction, timber frame construction, rammed earth construction, insulated concrete form construction (ICF), structural insulated panel construction (SIPS), and the incorporation of numerous innovative products into a variety of these construction methods. My experience is in both remodeling and additions as well as start to finish new construction. Most of my experience is from breaking ground to backing in the moving truck.
As a finish carpenter, I have been extremely privileged to have been employed in such projects as the renovation of the Julia Morgan Hayfields House and other very beautiful restoration projects.
My furniture has been in the Shaker and Craftsman styles predominantly. I found that these styles suited my philosophy of using materials and design respectfully to create natural and honest beauty. I chose to be a craftsman. And as such, it is my desire and commitment to produce works of lasting quality which the owner can both afford and feel proud to have.
Additionally, I have an active family. My wife Mary is very involved in our community. She also excels at raising and educating our very gregarious ten year old son. We enjoy ocean sports and activities, and have owned and operated Santa Cruz Jujitsu Academy for more than ten years.
